birds on the brain

I went to see Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds this afternoon. Fathom Events ran the movie in theaters around the states. It has been years since I've seen it. It is terrifying and magnificent. Still. From the idea of birds turning on humans to the blonde perfection of Tippi Hedren. It did make me feel a little homesick - okay, a lot. Beginning in San Francisco then set in Bodega Bay which is just a stone's throw away from "home." How I miss the ocean. Anyway...in honor of the crow in the below publicity shot of Ms. Hedren, I've gathered a few favorite crow pictures.

Whenever I send an Etsy order - either brownrose or barbierose - I like to include a little something. When my printer worked, I sometimes included greeting cards or ACEOs - depending on the size of the order. My printer no longer works and I now outsource the printing of my photos. I've been trying to figure out something to include that isn't cost prohibitive, time prohibitive, includes a photo and information, but not a regular business card. While driving to the Bay Area and back today - a six hour drive for me - I thought of the idea of a postcard size business card. By the time I returned home, I had the idea completely worked out in my head. I can print them myself on my 4x6 printer and I can change the images as I like. Here's my first draft, so to speak...

retail therapy

A little out-of-sorts today - nothing important, just anxious, I embarked on what my niece calls "retail therapy." I've been looking for awhile for a couple of astrological inspired prints for J and me - one Scorpio, one Libra. I almost always dislike the artwork for both signs. Tonight I came across a couple of cards on Etsy with sweet designs - not too cutesy, just right. They're cards so the size is right and the price is right. I'll mat and frame them and they'll be perfect in our respective bedrooms.

I just realized I've never written about barbierose. I sell my photos - animals, Nature, life-inspired - under brownrose on Etsy. I've always had a thing for Barbie. I played with Barbies until my pre-teens when my mother took them all away from me. "You're too old to play with Barbies!" Hmmm. Too old. Over the last few years, I've collected quite a few Barbie dolls and clothes - and shoes. Did you know there are Louboutin Barbie shoes??? Anyway, I've recently been taking photos of them. I don't feel I've quite found my vision yet with the dolls. I keep shooting away. The photos I like I post in a separate shop - barbierose. Here's a small selection...

I love ACEO/ATCs. Those 2.5x3.5 inch bits of art. I have dozens. Not only am I able to own art from artists that I couldn't otherwise afford, I am able to own wonderful art. And the small size touches the miniature lover in me.

My sister is nine years older than I am. She was my idol. In many ways, she had more influence over me than our mother did. We shared a bedroom and a bed. Everything she loved, I loved - art and horses, especially. Unfortunately, in our family there was room for only one of each kind of child. My brother was the mechanical genius and recluse. My sister was horse-crazy and a natural born artist - the popular one. I was the "baby" - specifically the "cry baby." But that is all another story...

I was a lonely and constantly alone child. I relied on books and my imagination for company and pleasure. One of my favorite pasttimes was playing with my sister's Breyer horses. My favorite was the rearing appaloosa. I had one horse - a little white pony. I still have her. Sadly, White Fluffy Love knocked her off the windowsill and broke her leg. Luckily, she's not real and her leg can be mended with glue. She will be with me for the rest of my life.
